Six months after the launch of the OnePlus 5T the manufacturer, faithful to its slogan “Never Settle”, launches a renewal whose focus is to improve the user experience. This is the OnePlus 6 and then our impressions of the new terminal.

OnePlus 6

The technical sheet of the OnePlus 6 against its predecessor is very similar although there is an important change, the processor. Here the jump and implications of using the Snapdragon 845 will always bring small advantages that according to the level of software and user optimization can be important.

Profiling a good glass-based design

The use of glass is no longer a novelty but a trend that must be assumed, despite the particular preferences we each have. OnePlus adds to it and abandons the metal in favor of a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 crystal.

The change to the glass gives the OnePlus 6 a greater elegance and shows that this is a trend that we must assume for all high-end.

OnePlus 6

Thus, with front and back glass, the OnePlus 6 wins in elegance. Especially in this color Look Black that is very attractive. Then there will be two more variants: Midnight Black, a matt black; and Silk White, white silk.

The problem with glass is that, however striking it may be, it implies some dangers and drawbacks to metal. Especially in terms of resistance, because in terms of fingerprints it is true that even catching them are not marked as much as in other proposals.

Another drawback is that as with the OnePlus 5T, because of that reduced thickness of the edges and the softness of the metal (now the glass) the terminal is somewhat slippery. Luckily with the covers everything is solved and in addition to gaining security we continue to maintain the feeling of comfort at hand.

As a detail and despite the change of material, usually justified to have a premium finish and wireless charging system, here OnePlus has not implemented the latter. Some may miss this charge for convenience offered by wireless charging but seeing how well the Dash Charge system works (OnePlus quick charge) the truth is that it is not a major absence.

OnePlus 6

For the rest, the OnePlus 6 maintains the same design essence of 5T. Its body is basically the same in both dimensions and form. The differences are in elements such as the Alert Slider button, which now happens to be above the power button and not over the volume control button.

Another change is the location of the cameras, to be on one side and aligned horizontally now we have them centered and vertically. As a detail, the flash has logically also moved and the NFC sensor is located between both lenses.

In the lower part we have the speaker, the USB type C connector (USB 2.0) and the headphone input. And ready, to appreciate the other big change we must go to the front, there we will see his new panel with notch.

AMOLED and Notch on a 6.28-inch screen

OnePlus 6

The screen of the previous OnePlus already offered a good performance. In this case, and in the absence of more in-depth testing, the feeling is that it is at least at the same level.

With AMOLED technology, a 6.28-inch diagonal and support for sRGB and DCI-P3, the highlight of the OnePlus 6 screen is the jump to the 19: 9 aspect ratio and the Notch.

With notch and 19: 9 aspect ratio the OnePlus 6 screen offers a pleasant first impression in all aspects.

Due to that aspect ratio the effective resolution becomes 2280 x 1080 pixels. These few additional pixels in height get to hit a little at the beginning. Giving the feeling of having a terminal too elongated. But in a matter of minutes we got used to it. In addition we can hide it via software. And when we do what we will have, it will be an area of vision with aspect ratio 18:9.

With a good tactile response, in our first impressions both the chromatic representation and contrast, viewing angles and brightness are at a very good level. There will not be many problems in situations with a lot of ambient light.

A hardware that seeks the best user experience

OnePlus 6

Beyond the aesthetic redesign, always key and important in order to attract the user, the reasons why OnePlus decides to take out its new OnePlus 6 with only six months of difference compared to the 5T are the existing opportunities at the hardware level.

This to the user who recently bought the 5T may bother him but who was waiting for a new option to change the smartphone is great. In this way, with a Snapdragon 845, Adreno 630 GPU, up to 8 GB of LPDDRX4 RAM, up to 256 GB UFS 2.1 2-Lane and all the expected connectivity (WiFi ac, NFC, LTE, GPS, Glonass, …) the OnePlus 6 mounts practically the last of the last

With this technical sheet the theory tells us that at the performance level there should not be any kind of problem. In our first contact both the system and the executed applications have behaved fluidly and without appreciating any heating, important detail for when we demand more.

Undoubtedly, in this section of hardware OnePlus continues to demonstrate its ability to offer terminals with the best of the moment at a very competitive price. Which is certainly achieved by cutting, according to them, aspects that are more marketing and have no real impact on most users.

Oxygen OS, based on Android 8.1, makes us forget pure Android

OnePlus 6

Oxygen OS, system based on Android 8.1, proves to be a good substitute for those looking for a Pure Android experience. It is true that sometimes certain functions are lost but others are also gained.

Here the highlight has always been fluency. As in the 5T the system is going very well. However, there are software-level innovations that we want to try more calmly in order to have a real assessment of the product.

For the rest, Oxygen OS continues to offer in this OnePlus 6 already known features such as custom gestures to launch the camera application, stop the music, etc. As well as several unlock options, including facial recognition and fingerprint reader.

The fingerprint reader is still the most reliable and fastest method. But facial recognition is at a high level, it works very fast and when there is little light it rests on the screen to illuminate our face and thus recognize us.

Same scheme, better cameras (in theory)

OnePlus 6

In the section of cameras OnePlus maintains the same scheme of the previous generation. On the front we have a unique sensor signed by Sony with 16MP resolution and lens with aperture f2.0. On the back, a dual system with two cameras also signed by Sony of 16 and 20 MP respectively (both with lenses with aperture f1.7).

Of the two sensors in the main chamber, the 16MP is the important one and includes both mechanical stabilization (OIS) and electronic stabilization (EIS). Both systems aim to offer a better quality in both photos and videos.

OnePlus 6, climbing in everything

OnePlus 6

The new OnePlus 6 is a terminal that will not leave indifferent any fans of the brand or passionate about technology in general. In this new generation, it scales in every way. From the design, more elegant and very mature after several years of refinement, even in hardware and user experience that ultimately is the main value together with an adjusted price.

Of course, this year the price of OnePlus 6 rises slightly compared to 5T. It is a small rise that should not scare potential buyers but indicates where they are going. Because they will always try to be competitive but at a certain point you also have to be profitable to be able to continue investing in future advances.

After this first contact the OnePlus 6 is a terminal that likes, there are many sections where we want to deepen in order to have details.
